Mis ciudades
(my cities)

This is a personal project that I started developing while living in London, as I felt homesick, being so far away from my native country. I found myself thinking of Mexican cities that had made an impression on me and held some kind of personal significance. As a designer, the focus of my work has been in textiles, as such I would consider my style to be deeply rooted in fabric and colour. Texture is also very important in my work. For this project, I chose various towns with emotional significance, and from these starting points I created an abstract representation of how I felt and lived in each place. For me, the entire process is part of a much wider one which I feel that each of us have to confront in one way or another when we are far away from our homes. Perhaps this sense of belonging, of feeling tied to your country of birth becomes much stronger when you are not there. Now I am back home, and I'm planning to do a second series of maps of various other places in the world that have influenced my life, such as Barcelona, Istanbul, London, New York, Guatemala, Havana and San Jose. Through this use of maps I have found a new way of capturing my feelings and memories of places which, for various reasons, are important to me.
