A teacher and administrator with a PhD in educational leadership, Mary E. Streshly has been a doctorial lecturer at her San Francisco State University alma mater since 2021. Mary Streshly is also a board member of the Bay Area Gardeners Scholarship Foundation.
A nonprofit organization that has been awarding scholarships since 2006, the Bay Area Gardeners Scholarship Foundation (BAGSF) helps students overcome financial obstacles to pursue higher education and achieve their life goals. Its founder, gardening business owner Catalino Tapia, had only a sixth-grade education himself. However, after putting his son through law school, he became inspired to help other young people afford the costs of college.
From 2006 to 2022, BAGSF has distributed more than 200 scholarships to help students pay for postsecondary education at their preferred institutions of higher learning. Today, many BAGSF scholarship recipients are successful professionals and contributing members of their communities. In fact, one former recipient sits on the BAGSF board of directors.
