Envisioning Better Futures through Experience • an explorative research project
For the past year, my practice has revolved around experience design, and how the physicality of the designed objects around us, and the design of a specific space or environment, affect our experience of them. With this project, I wanted to study the influence designed experience have within our perception and rendering of the world around us, and to create documentation of these findings within the form of an editorial piece.
Envisioning Better Futures through Experience (a research exploration of current designed experiences that help shape the future) is a research project and editorial piece that focuses on the design practice of Ólafur Elíasson and the non-violent civil disobedience systems of Extinction Rebellion. This piece analyses the ways in which each one of them activates within the discourse of our current climate emergency, using different avenues of design thinking and design application. The narrative of this piece is driven by an image-based layout, with text interlaced throughout the manipulated images.
The project consists of a 50 page editorial piece, made up of an 5000 word academic paper. The contents present research from the field of experience design, definitions of experience design, and how these notions have been applied within the contemporary art and design scene, and their impact on the social and political landscapes. Showcased below is the visual development of the editorial piece (through sketchbooking), as well as the contextual research and findings explored within this project.
The digital assets of this piece have been created using a worklfow which combines Adobe InDesign (as a primary software), Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Photoshop (for images manipulation).
