Computer vision syndrome (Digital eye strain), is a group of eye and vision problems. The problems can include, eyes that itch and tear, and are dry and red. It results from prolonged computer, tablet, e-reader, and cell phone use. In today’s work environment (both IT and Non-IT world) an average person is spending close to 8-9 hours looking at a computer screen. Apart from working hours, we add a lot of screen time to our lives by mobile phone and TV use. Due to Digital eye strain, Your eyes may feel tired or uncomfortable. You may not be able to focus normally. This eye strain is very common in both children and adults.
Who is at more risk of Computer vision Syndrome (CVS)?
You may be at greater risk if you:
View your digital device at the wrong angle or wrong posture
Are too close to your digital device screen
Have eye problems (even minor ones) not corrected with glasses or contact lenses
Don’t take breaks while you are working
Work in a dim-lit room
As a result, the eye focusing and eye movement requirements for digital screen viewing can place additional demands on the visual system.
Do I have CVS?
The most common symptoms are:
Eyestrain.
Dry eyes.
Headaches.
Blurred vision.
Muscle spasm.
Neck, shoulder, and back pain.
Treatment for Computer Vision Syndrome
As such CVS is not a life-threatening condition, but if left unchecked, can lead to severe eye problems. Before even starting any sort of treatment, it is always advised; that if you are spending a lot of time on the digital screen do visit your eye doctor periodically.
Treatment starts with creating a better work environment, with these simple practices, you can reduce the effects of computer vision syndrome:
Make sure the lighting in the room is comfortable on the eyes and prevents you from staring into the glare on the computer screen. If required use a screen glare filter.
20-20-20 rule – Every 20 minutes, look into the distance at least 20 feet away from the computer or digital device. Do this for at least 20 seconds.
Position the digital display so that your head is in a naturally comfortable position while using
Take breaks. A few minutes away from the computer can go a long way when it comes to your eyes. Think of it similarly to the way you take stretch breaks for your arms and back.
In case of existing eye care problems, your eye care provider will also need to treat any hidden health problems; for example in case of dry eyes:
lubricating eye drops can be of great help
Treating associated allergies
Taking a prescription medicine to increase tear production
Stay hydrated and keep a humid work environment
Advances in IOL or Intraocular Lenses Link have led us to trifocal lenses that can manage three focal points at once. These are proven to be extremely helpful with CVS.
