Lunes Domingo - February

This is the February poster series for the musical group Lunes Domingo.  Their February showcase features my friends The Brown James.  It was my first serious attempt at hand lettering.  There's still a lot to learn but I am very pleased with the outcome.  Below I've included shots I took during the various phases of development to shed a little light on how I work.

PROCESS
Music

I rarely work without music.  It's an important thing to me.  Here are some albums I put on repeat during this project

Otis Redding - The King of Soul
Louis Armstrong - Sings/Back Through The Years
Tinariwen - Emmaar
Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma (a regular when I work)
Initial Sketching

Colors started to be planned at this stage but things did change.  I initially wanted a black poster instead of white.
Final rough sketch
Guides

I tried this process before on a different project for the MC Faba Van Exel but never could get the letters exactly how I imagined them in my head.  While I was working on this process I also started reading Mark Waid's Daredevil and in the extra material in the back was a detailed process of how the artists took a crappy rough sketch to a beautiful finished project.  One of the pieces I noticed was that the artists added in perspective lines to help with the final penciling.  I decided to try this out and it paid off.  Scanned in the rough sketch and added vertical/andgled lines for reference in the next step.
Final Pencil

The guides helped straighten things out quite a bit, but it wasn't quite where I wanted it.
Final Ink

During inking I made a few changes.  Simplifying the o on Domingo, Straightening the top of the J out and settling on a plain L hoping a solution would come to me later
Vectorize

I scanned in the ink and set out tracing the entire drawing.  This was the most tedious part of the whole process but also the most satisfying.  I have never attempted this step before due to laziness but I'm glad I pushed through. Guides (not shown) came back again to help align everything.
