One of the enduring thematic tropes of action films has been the
handsome, charming, and reckless double-agent. During
the 1960s, two characters dominated the espionage
genre, James Bond and Harry Palmer. Both
were British, both were based on popular
novels, but while Bond was flamboyant
and hyper-masculine, Palmer
was the everyman—cynical,
pedestrian and entirely
relatable to British
audiences.
