Martian Formicary
Log #1 (Sol 12)
Concept of operation:

The long-duration mission would last 600 days plus 18 months of travel (round trip). The concept of operation will be divided into three main stages. Firstly, a robotic mission will arrive on Mars surface and start constructing the main supporting buildings (as landing pads and nuclear reactors) and lava tubes’ structures. Afterwards, a crew of 6 astronauts will start the colonization while further developing these stages. In the third stage, it is intended to fully evolve from a mixed class habitat type to an entirely class type 3 which will be able to facilitate from 36 up to 108 astronauts.

Masterplan: The Martian Formicary consists of two colonies in order to minimize redundancy. The second one above the ground developed for safety reasons accommodating supportive functions and the first, main base located in the existing lava tubes. Our underground safe haven can expand in both horizontal and vertical directions allowing us to minimize risks of future colony expansion, by flexible and adaptive development.

Overall, there are two main  landing sites, each one includes three landing pads (commercial, cargo and emergency). To take full advantage of the dust and wind produced during landing and takeoff, electro static wires are placed around the landing pad that will generate wind static power. A nuclear fission power plant will become the main power source, located in the far right location as well as in-situ resource utilization buildings and greenhouses which are placed in the middle. Lava tubes will be explored and built in two stages.

Communication is crucial for any space exploration or early colony development in even remote areas of Earth. Martian Formicary propose three main satellites: for navigation, communication and weather analysis.
Phoebes, will become the fourth informal satellite, which not only will provide a weather forecast, track and analyze storms, but also will become an important scientific outpost for material extraction and supply to the proposed colony.
