Khasakakinte Ithihasam | An experimental film

Khasakinte Ithihasam (The legend of Khasak)

Second year Filmmaking Project

Khasakinte Ithihasam (The legend of Khasak) is a novel by O V Vijayan. This was shot in my second year of communication design studies at NID, Madhya Pradesh, under the guidance of Milan John. The brief was to choose a folktale from the place we hail from and shoot a scene. The setting of the movie is in a place called Thasrak ,which is famous for its mythical and fantastical culture and landscape.

This experimental short film follows the story Of Maimoona who sees a letter left by her lover Ravi, who leaves the village. She finds that Ravi is also leaving the village…She still doesn't know whats it that they both shared. She knew that she only loved Nizam Ali(her childhood friend) and she was married off against her wishes to Rawuthar. But Maimoona felt an abandonment like never before when Ravi left the village, just keeping that note. He was that person who gave her the refuge to talk and share when she was in a marriage that was against her wishes. Ravi leaving Khasak made not sad, but numb.She started realizing who he was to her and why is his departure affecting her so much.

The theme of Death and nature is interwoven with the main thread of the novel. Every man has an
internal urge to go back again to that passive state of human body and thereby forgetting everything
related to the human life.

Ravi says to himself;

Oh! God, I do not want to know anything, I want to sleep; an
eternal sleep from one birth to another birth like woods, shadow
earthy substance and also like the cloud. Rest in peace! Always!
