ABOUT THE BOOK

A contemporary story about the Russians in times of war and the madness of the regime as an enemy.

The Artists Book "Daniil Kharms" is dedicated to the Russian author and poet Daniil Ivanovych Yuvatchov / Kharms (1905-1942), absurdist and a Russian adant-garde notable figure from the early XX century.
Daniil Kharms is accused with anti-government charges by the Soviet Union totalitarian regime, sent into exile, twice arrested for taking part in "anti-soviet" activities and for "spreading slander and defeatist attitude". Last arrest coincides with the WWII attack and siege of Leningrad (Sankt Petersburg). To avoid execution and army mobilization, Daniil Kharms malingers a mental condition, leading to his death by starvation in the psychiatric ward of the prison, during the hardest period of famine in the sieged city.
The Artists Book focuses on three of the most significant absurdist sort stories of Kharms as the war in Leningrad develops in the background. Over 3 million people in the city die in the deadlock of famine, shelling and totalitarian regime. Where do the 'falling grannies' go, who is the lost without a trace ginger man and the relentlessly falling idiot-sons of Pushkin?  In these 'tales told by an idiot' we find joy and happiness, over the true madness of war and idiocy of the politicians.
