Project Overview

Basic idea behind this prototype was to help people having postpartum depression with self-help strategy. The target audience were mothers experiencing postpartum depression symptoms.

In the first couple of weeks after delivery, new mothers experience depression and anxiety, which is common. But if these symptoms lasts longer than 3 weeks there may be a chance of developing ‘Postpartum depression’. It is a type of depression with several symptoms which include, sadness, sleeplessness, anxiety, irritability and low in energy. To overcome this postpartum depression with a self-help strategy, our project team came up with an idea of designing a bracelet to recognise user’s stress level and react with music if it exceeds a threshold level.

The bracelet senses the user's depression levels through sensors and reacts with motivational speeches (via Podcast) if user's stress level crosses threshold level.

Role: UX Researcher & UX Designer in a team of 4 members.

Project Duration: 2 months

Process: Research - Survey - Empathize- Persona&Scenario creation - Sketching - Paper prototye- Testing & Iterate - Hi-Fi prototype (working on designing Hi-Fi prototype in Figma)
User Research:
Conducted surveys to assess thoughts, opinions and feelings of target users.

Participants' profile - First time mother with a kid of less than one year old, living in Sweden.

Survey Results
Survey results and brainstroming:
1. A short survey was conducted with sixteen mothers, who were having a kid of age between 1yr-2yr.
2. Results indicated that they strongly require motivation towards their life and stress relieving techniques.
3. Fitbit kind of device which senses stress level of user and react with motivational speeches and music has been considered. For this purpose, podcast feature has been considered. (with an additional manual ON/OFF button)
Empathize:
Persona & Scenario
Based on the conducted user research, a persona has been created. Throughout the entire product development process, this persona has been refered.
User research method was used to create persona, by having conversations with few of the study participants. It helped to understand their needs, experiences, behaviors and empathise them.
A bluetooth option and manual ON/OFF button features have been added after persona creation. (In case, the user don't want to listen)
Design:
Sketching and prototyping:
Prototype A and Prototype B
Paper prototypes - Stage 1
Two Lo-fi paper prototypes have been created.
A. With rotary input scrolling
B. With touch screen
Paper prototype
Prototyping - Stage 2
By combining advantages of two prototypes, final prototype has been created.
Testing:
Cognitive Walkthrough:
To examine the product usability, congnitive walkthrough has been condected based on created persona.
User Testing:
Before launching the product, to test if the product is satisfying user requirements and test usability, 'Expert review' ; 'Direct Field Observation method' and 'Interviews' have been conducted with 5 members of the surveyed participants.

Improvements after testing-
1. Added 'info' page with details of all icons used in the product.
2. Recording day-to day summary of stress levels in connected mobile has been added to check if the user has had any improvements after using the device.
Hi-fi prototype:
Coming soon!
Working on preparing an interactive prototype in Figma.
Key Learnings:

1. Practical experience in conducting research, building prototypes and usability testing with targeted population. Understood the significance of creating personas and scenarios in design process.

2. My biggest fear was to reach out the target users, as it is unusual to find new mothers, whose characteristcs match with the study sample criteria. But I finally managed to get required number of participants in both stages (through snowball sampling method) - survey & usability testing.
