Local Projection Project
“Local Projection Project” is a creative series initiated by artists CHEN Hsuan-Ming and HUANG Atz since 2017. Through the visit and investigation of the base and with the venue characteristics and visual design, it collages images with vessels, rendering dimensional variations and illusionary effects to unseal new imaginations. We paid a visit to the Xinpingxi Coal Mine by chance, initiating an exploration and investigation of the industrial relic and cultural asset. Meanwhile, we accumulated the physical experience of the climate and environment in Shifen. As we delved deeper, either through on-site investigation and mapping or interviews with veteran miners, the life experiences of miners have granted us unforgettable impacts. They were tensions in life as much as struggles with reality. The rich stories drew us to the place as we attempted to dig deeper into the memories of the times again and again.

Layer is a collaborative work with building projection mapping, music performance, and dance combined. A dialogue with the building is generated in the scale of humans. The dim light of a dancer contrasts with the projection on the building. The light serves as the extension of the dancer’s body. Through interaction with light, it interprets the inner status of each phase. The isolation and alienation in the dark is projected to the coal unloading yard that transforms the mine remain in reality into fantasy. It may be tunnels, strata, or wisps of smoke of concentrated energy. In terms of music design, electronic music mix is combined with live handpan performance. The colossal, dark depression beneath earth is represented through the mixer and boomer acoustically. After a violent, drastic change, the ethereal sounds of handpan pierce through, echoing with the moist obscurity in the natural environment or the refreshing air after the rain. It is like an ensemble with sounds of creatures, resonating between the relic and the mountains. Now, in the ruin-like industrial relic and the venue existing only in performance, the illusionary visions entwine amidst the light, teleporting audience into a reality that exists only in the moment.

The work was inspired by the daily routines of entering and existing the mine. Each day, the miners confronted the unknown in the tunnels, the sense of uncertainty below the ground, and the light upon returning to the surface after work.
Nonetheless, in the short cycle of work, it is as if they had been through reincarnations time and again.

The work is divided into three chapters, i.e. Entry, Darkness, and Flow.

“Entry” unveils the curtain. The audience in the dark are guided by the dim light of a dancer visually to the front of a building. The dancer becomes a seeker. She steps forward into the land of sands and gravels and walks betwixt pillars. The dazzling light source lures and calls, as the dancer follows through the tunnel of light, slowly absorbed into the darkness in silence. Chapter II “Darkness” tells the fantasies in the infinite darkness. They are like the liquid particles beneath the strata, tumbling and turbulent. Expending and growing savagely like organisms all of a sudden, they corrode and shroud everything around. As for Chapter III “Flow,” the ethereal sounds initiate the interaction of the dancer with light flows. In the midst of the slowly saturating warmth, it returns to tranquility yet again.

Layer is a writing of our state of mind for the Xinpingxi Mine over the years. In the process of ongoing research, a kind of connection was established somehow, as we became parts of it. Through our cumulated experiences, we overlap the past with the present, comprehending the memory generated in the past on site. The memory in fact occurs in the present, and so does our perception. With the presentation of our work, we invite everyone to the venue to keep exploring the place via different angles. You are welcome to the Xinpingxi Coal Mine to experience the nature and narratives here.
