Visualizing Meteorites

‘Meteorites: Earth Impact’ is an attempt to visualize meteorites that have impacted earth in the past. The Meteoritical Society has a massive database of all the recorded meteorites that have collided with Earth dating as far back as 2500 BCE, providing the most comprehensive public picture of known meteorite collisions. This visualization is my first attempt at an interactive visualization and was built for the ‘Visualizing Meteorites’ contest held by Visualizing.org in the month of May 2013.

Dataset used: Meteorite Landings

The Visualization can be visited at the project URL. You can read more about the project here. It was also ‘Staff Picked’ at Visually.
The Map is created using Tilemill and powered by Mapbox. It had hover interactivity.
The column chart was done using an experimental visualization library called 'dViz'. It offered a wrapper for libraries like Google charts, making it easier for the average person to use. It also had hover interactivity.
The scatterplot was built using D3.js and showed the meteorites from a country point of view.
I treated this project as a way of playing with the various visualization tools available and I had a lot of fun working on it. The time duration was 1 week.
