Designed Futures Poster

Designed Futures
HISTORICAL POSTER

OVERVIEW

This project requires a balance of both new and old. Using historical knowledge of specific art movements and contemporary design as inspiration to produce a Risograph printed poster that demonstrates what the 'Designed Futures' looks like from the perspective of a growing designer.

GOALS

The goal is to share what "Designed Futures" looks like from my perspective as an up and coming designer. Using the DADA Poster movement as my style inspiration to convey this message using various design principles such as type, color and imagery. The poster must also be produced using a Risograph printer, which requires knowledge of preparing files for this type of printing.

SOLUTION

My vision of what the 'Designed Futures' looks like is bold, loud, and diverse. To convey this message I chose the DADA Art movement as my style inspiration. The style incorporates collage art and type to create an image that grabs the viewers attention and conveys a message without directly stating it. The mouths, exclamation marks, and bold colors work to emphasize the loudness, and the faces and various type styles work to display diversity.

RESEARCH

Research was a key part in bringing this poster to life. Taking from the past, The DADA Art Movement and using contemporary collage design of the present, I was able to display my message. The DADA movement was full of collage and poster art, that centered around protest and chaotic type of the time. Contemporary designers in 2021 continue to use these types of methods to this day and hopefully they will continue into the future.
DRAFTS

Drafting was a huge part of the process for this project. The elements and images displayed in the poster were determined early on. What changed in each variation was the positioning of each element. The energy of the poster was determined by how each part was arranged. If the elements were aligned and straight it would make the energy stale. With just some tilting and bleeding images off the page it produced an additional layer of movement and chaos, which is what was the goal.
