This is becoming an increasingly popular effect.  Most recently, it's featured in the opening credits to BBC One's hit crime drama, "Sherlock".  Originally shot in real time, the footage was sped up to 4x its original speed.  I then added a posterizing effect and a luma matte and finished it off with a text layer.  Software used:  After Effects.
