Playful Type - Neptune's Garden

The Brief
Produce a full typeface and alphabet based on the phrase “Neptune’s Garden”. Communicate the visual message through typography, using experimentation and creative direction. This brief was set for my "Playful Type" module in university.
Breaking down the rules and conventions of type to understand how to build a typeface, drawing visual inspiration from Neptune’s trident, Ancient Rome and vine overgrowth. The typeface is a modified Times New Roman, as it is the right balance of Roman and god visuals that were desired. Adobe Illustrator was used to edit create the typeface and later Adobe Photoshop was utilized for the displacement map to add the metallic element.
The vine overgrowth came from the word ‘garden’ and links back to Ancient Rome whose architecture was known for overgrown vines. The typeface is captialized to be loud and powerful like the voice of a god. The serifs are as sharp as Neptune’s trident. The gold colour is reminiscent of tridents, gold coins and the colour of royalty and power.

The typeface is lustrous, beaten and metallic with scaling vines wrapped around it. A typeface that could only be found in a place like Neptune’s Garden.
