The yunza, Cortamonte or tomb is an ancient ritual celebration, practiced throughout Peru, in which the attendants must dance, surrounding the tree, waiting for the tree with the gifts to fall by means of machetes. This activity is mainly carried out at Carnivals. It is called 'yunza', 'mountain tomb' or 'cortamonte', on the coast; 'umisha' (tree with gifts) in the jungle, or 'sacha cuchuy' in Quechua ('cut tree') or also called 'huanchihualito'.
According to the Andean cosmovision, it has a sexual representation of man (tree) and woman (land). The meaning of the tree falling to the ground is to pay homage to Mama Pacha. The celebration also has a symbolic charge with a message of abundance when "the tree is adorned with gifts.
