Grand opening held on 1/11/11
The new Dali Museum is located only eight blocks north of the old one, on St. Petersburg's sunny inland bay. A parade was held along the route and culminated in a festival on the new site, featuring dignitaries from around the world. Dali himself would have been proud of the effort in his name.
Although the old museum was very popular, it did not provide proper protection for the $8 billion worth of art it housed. The new edifice is resistant to a force 5 hurricane, the highest classification, with internal, recessed walls that can be deployed to create a vault of protection around the priceless artworks.
