Thoughts on Typography and Layout

Thoughts on Typography and Layout:

The aim of this assessment was to produce a printed Publication Design based on the four essays; The Crystal Goblet, Grid Systems, The Science of Typography, and Typography as Discourse. Each page needed to reflect the meaning behind each essay, overall visually communicating the typographic styles

The publication design needed to include these elements; Front, back, inside front, and inside back covers, front matter: title, copyright, and contents pages, main content (body): the four essays, back matter: biographies, colophon, as well as page numbers / folios.

Below I have provided a small sample of the pages I produced. This gives context as to the ideas and approaches I took within this assessment.

The intended audience for this book is aspiring Graphic designers, as well as University students who are seeking inspiration into the Visual Communication world.

Throughout all pages of the book I used the body typeface; Kepler Std. This typeface has sufficient legibility and was sized to 10 pt. across all a4 pages, after test printing multiple times I found that this type size provided the best readability.

In order for all pages to flow I repeated the bright yellow and red colour blocks throughout the book, this was a great way to combine all the essays into a book, creating a wholistic approach.

The front and back cover of the book was printed onto 300 gsm whilst the body pages were printed at 160 gsm, this thicker grain of paper ensured durability for the refined outcome. The book was saddle stitched with a total of 16 pages.

This project has been an excellent way to practice spread layouts using grids and guides properly, I have learnt how to properly import text which will be very effective in my future career of visual communication design. This will be extremely helpful in the future when I am designing publications that are requested by clients.
