Seven Words

The request of the exercise was to represent graphically a short story of seven words.
The paintings of Jean-Michel Basquiat, emblematic protagonist of the New York’s scene of the 80s, were the first
inspiration.
Basquiat’s art focused on “suggestive dichotomies,” such as wealth versus poverty, integration versus segregation, and inner versus outer experience. He appropriated poetry, drawing and painting, and married text and image, abstraction and figuration, and historical information mixed with contemporary critique.
Basquiat used social commentary in his paintings as a “springboard to deeper truths about the individual”, as well as attacks on power structures and systems of racism, while his poetics were acutely political and direct in their criticism of colonialism and support for class struggle.
Metamorphosis is obtained by overlapping posters and advertisements, subsequently ripped than will emerge some abstract images from lacerations, fingerprints taking a ‘visionary visual intensity. The original images fade until they are completely invisible, the metamorphosis takes place in that moment.
Décollage is an artistic technique which consists in the opposed proceedings of collage, invented by Mimmo Rotella in 1953-54. Instead of adding elements to the work, it’s start with an art object from which the parts are detached, the origin was the “informal” culture the casual gesture, matter poor. It is going to represent a protest against a social situation that now “survives” between the myths of consumerism after World War II. As the cuts of Fontana, Burri as combustions.
Mimmo Rotella, tagged by critics as a ripper or painter of glued paper. He is due to the discovery of the advertising poster as artistic expression of the city and it is with him that is born dècollage. Paste on canvas pieces of torn posters on the street, taking the Cubist collage and contaminating it with the matrix of the Dadaist ready made. Wheel uses décollage to ensure a community cultural and artistic second half of 900, a further conceptual study, to rediscover classical art with a simple systematic, repetitive, lacerating, explanatory.
On the same road work Eric Cheung and Sean Martindale, make the idea of adding green spaces in the urban project: the poster pocket plantes. The project is to cut out the posters pasted on the walls of small pockets in which to put soil and plants to create an improvised system of green walls. Theirs is a real project derives its urban activism repeatable in other cities.
The font used is “Industry” by Neville Brody. Industry is a sanserif font designed in 1984 for the magazine “The Face”. Is now applied in the NBA logo and that of “Oklahoma City Thunder”.
