Carlos Paredes (1925 – 2004)
Carlos Paredes was a virtuoso of the Portuguese twelve-string guitar and a composer.

'During the 1950s and 1960 he was imprisoned for opposing the Portuguese dictatorship, spending some of that time in solitary confinement. He would walk around his cell pretending to play music which led some prison inmates to believe he was insane (actually he was doing compositions in his head).
Paredes is credited with popularising his chosen instrument internationally and was known as the “Man with a Thousand Fingers”, in a reference to his natural virtuosity.'

Carlos Paredes - Exhibition Poster

'You hear a lot of breathing when you listen to Carlos Paredes. When he leans into some of those bewitching, cascading arpeggios and venerable melodies, it’s already sounding transportive enough. But sometimes, when the music’s sad tension is relieved - often after a particularly long and impressive run - Paredes inhales loudly. What’s left in that half-second - before he leans into it all again - is a feeling of utter conviction in what this person’s doing and why he’s doing it. You start to take the breaths as inadvertent promptings, and in their way they become as entwined in the music as his guitar.'

This type-based image effect was created by copying the body of text above and using the 'paste into' function to replace a selected high contrast part of the image.

Carlos Paredes also wrote a number of film scores and received particular recognition for the 1961 Paulo Rocha film 'Verdes Anos' (Tender Years)

PERPETUAL MOVEMENTS - Cine Tribute to CARLOS PAREDES. A 2006 film by Edgar Pera with live soundtrack by legendary portuguese guitar composer and player Carlos Paredes, Auditório Carlos Alberto - Porto 1984

"When I die, my guitar also dies. My father used to say that when he died, he would like his guitar to be broken and buried with him. I would like the same to happen. If I have to die.” - Carlos Paredes

In this poster I used the 'type in a path' function, which I drew around the subject of the picture, and the 'transform+distort' option to make the quote fit inside the body of the guitar.

'William Morris (1834–1896) was the single most influential designer of the nineteenth century.
Morris was a political theorist, scholar, translator and publisher, an environmental campaigner, writer and poet as well as an outstanding designer.
He was associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and the English Arts and Crafts Movement.'

The WM innitials effect seen on the black area was acheived by 'painting' it on, using 'type as a brush'.
The design also includes one of his famous fabric patterns and one of his poems.

Banksy "From Alley to LA"
Once again, I wanted to finish with something fun and colourful, so I decided to design a Graffitti inspired poster, hilighting Banksy's rise to fame.

'Banksy is a pseudonymous UK street artist, political activist, film director and painter. Although he is most famous for his street based
stencil graffiti work he has also put on a wide variety of shows in unusual locations, released a film 'Exit Through The Gift Shop'
and conducted many well publicised pranks.'

The 3D graffiti style title effect was acheived by creating a clipping mask of the wall on the left and adding other effects such as Bevel and Emboss.
