What is a Jayhawk?
The story of how the Jayhawk came to be. A vision for the KU Class of 2015 tee-shirt design.
"Jayhawk" was coined around 1848. It combines two birds; the noisy and quarrelsome blue jay and the stealthy hunter sparrow hawk. During the 1850s, the Kansas territory was filled with such Jayhawks. The area was a battleground between those wanting a slave state and free state advocators. Lawrence, Kansas, where KU would be founded, was a free state stronghold. Keep tradition alive, stay a Lawrence stronghold. Class of 2015.
