Urban Images Graz
When I travel, I hate sightseeing. The reason I travel is getting to know other places as experienced by the locals. Still, the locals ́perception of their surroundings is highly subjective, as is my view on my hometown Graz.
I did this photo spread as practical part of my bachelor thesis. I want to show places, buildings and objects which give my home-town Graz its unique feeling. What I intend to convey is not a per- spective of Graz as the tourism industry would promote it but an image of the city that sheds light on, perhaps, more trivial aspects. In combination, these aspects provide insight into everyday life in an individual and unconventional manner.
My approach was to experience the city. I did not follow any specific route but selected the subjects on account of spontaneous visual impulses. Spontaneity is an essential aspect of urban photography, as everyday images can best be capured instinctively. The only target I set myself was not just to show Graz as an entirely romantic, charming city but as a place of contrasts. As a result, the photo spread became an ensemble of detailed, total, ugly, posh, natural, architectural, colorful and dull subjects found throughout the city. Enjoy.

Daungasse - This Hakenkreuz is supposed to show that apart from many positive aspects, Graz also has a terrible past as a Nazi stronghold in Austria. I dissociate myself vehemently from this ideology and I hope that someday the Hakenkreuz disappears entirely from the walls of this city.
