Sketches of Russia

The Siege of Leningrad as I imagined it. Walking into the Hermitage square I was so impressed by the Angel atop the Alexander Column, built to commemorate the defeat of Napoleon. Not because it was such a magnificent piece, but rather its solitary pose against a dreary bleak sky and a collective thought of what all this angel had witnessed below on the Czar’s Square. From the Bolshevik Revolution to the Nazi Blitz and siege, I tucked away the idea to later draw this column from a vantage that proved to be rather challenging.

From a hawks vantage Orlovsky’s lonely stone angel; a silent stylite with a watchman’s view, bows over the pillars and steeples and onion domes.
Glistening aluminum birdhouse like boxes create a glimmering sea beneath the city’s skyline for as far as the eye can see.
An audience of stone gods perched like pigeons along the edge of the Winter Palace; silently retelling the ancient stories, they murmur among themselves.
The Goddess of Glory in her Chariot of Victory atop the Triumphal Arch gaze northwest, sharing the same view of the Neva River.
