Commissioned by Chingay Parade
The Chingay Parade started in 1973 as a street parade to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Since then, it has evolved into an annual iconic event that showcases Singapore’s rich and unique multi-ethnic and cosmopolitan cultures. The annual event is characterised by vibrant performers in elaborated costumes from different ethnicities, cultures and backgrounds; dazzling display of floats; huge intricate props and structures; and cultural performances from all around the world. Chingay now owns the reputation as one of Asia’s largest street performance and float parade, a colourful epitome of the country’s multi-cultural society and it was an honour to celebrate Chingay's 50th Anniversary milestone by being the only commissioning artist tasked to reimagine the Chingay float.
The inspiration comes from the colourful display of elaborate floats, costumes and performances of past Chingay Parades that showcased the rich multi-cultural elements and creativity, as well as people from different cultures coming together in harmony to celebrate. This harmonious celebration is built upon mutual respect and support.
The design uses a transitional collage with a modern twist to combine different elements across eras, ethnicities and cultures. I still remember the nostalgia of how we used to watch Chingay on tv and while researching and learning more about the festival for this year's theme, I couldn't help but feel so humbled by the spirit and dedication collectively poured into making this festival happen for 50 consecutive years. My heart is full and I'm very grateful for this honour.
This special bus design circulated the city throughout the duration of the campaign on multiple buses, and members of the public were encouraged to take pictures of the buses as they made their rounds on the roads.
