The Energy Hunters

An educational game / animation
about energy efficiency.

Can 8 year-olds acquire the knowledge on how to select energy efficient appliances?
Or even better, can they gain an energy saving mindset?

Ghajn Educational Centre in Malta educates children 8 to 10 y.o. on environmental issues. Their huge interactive screen games are composed of a. animated intro videos that explain the fundamental concepts and b. the game per se, based on the characters of the intro videos.

The interactive screen size is 2.1×1.3 meters

In order to showcase the impact of energy-related practices on the environment, it was important to depict accurately the natural ecosystem of Malta - an element that kids both recognize and care for - in a way as natural as dreamy.

That's why we decided to design all elements using techniques that simulate the natural means of illustration found in children's books and cartoons: crayons for the animated characters, watercolor, ink, and guash for the backgrounds, and colored pencils for the slideshows.

The Games
a sneak peak through the two games; "Pancake Volcano" on the left and "The Battle of the Five Rooms" on the right

1st Game
"Pancake Volcano"
The first game aims to the understanding of why some electric appliances are more efficient than others. The players make pancakes in four different stoves. The most efficient stoves produce more pancakes with less energy and the students compare the stoves' scores to match their energy labels.

2nd Game
"The Battle of the Five Rooms"
The players observe a family's wasteful habits and try to fix them. The sooner they tap on the problem the more energy is saved. The concept here is to put the children in a 3rd person perspective and become more conscious of their energy-wasting habits.

Slideshows

Each game's mission is encapsulated in a slideshow right before the game starts - and it is actually useful tips on energy efficiency! Slideshows also helped us bridge the narrative between the film and the games.

Making Of
We chose to build a world where pirates and technology co-exist, simply because it's cool. Electricity and it's use is the context, whereas the retrospective world and characters is the skin.

So, we mimicked the looks of the old school cel animation as the means of retrospection. We used Procreate, Photoshop and Premiere for video & Spine for the game animations.
