Shadowy Objects in Test Tubes is a woven narrative of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley and Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro, in three acts. I chose to integrate these two texts because, while they are from different genres, time periods, and cultures, they explore extremely similar themes, each raising the question of what it means to be human. Both texts present feats of science that are currently beyond our grasp and suggest that, as technology expands our capabilities as creators of life, our sense of responsibility needs to evolve along with this potential.
The book consists of two accordion-folded text blocks secured by spines on opposite sides so that the spreads overlap.
Die-cuts are used to selectively reveal elements on overlapping pages, further unifying the two texts.
