Ukrainian cities at war. Typeface design.

Ukrainian cities at war. Typeface design.

This project is a way to represent the war crimes russia do in Ukraine right now with the help of the design language.

Each of these Ukrainian cities has suffered a lot and it's only a small part of all the places that became victims of this war.

Each design is telling a certain story — whether it's a silhouette of a civilian building damaged by a missile attack or the letters are "shot through" as artillery attacks do.

Kharkiv—is a Ukrainian city made out of steel and concrete.
Borodyanka—a Ukrainian town not far from Kyiv has been destroyed by russian occupants.
This typeface represents the civilian building destroyed by the missile attack.
BUCHA. GENOCIDE. Stabbing pain just as sharp corners of the letters.

Bucha is what has changed us again after February 24. It’s inhuman, hellish violence made by the russian beasts. The letters are "shot through" by artillery attacks.
IRPIN, a town near Kyiv, was reduced to rubble by russian forces. Hundreds of people were killed. The ones who survived were raped by russian occupants. Most of buildings are destroyed.

Here is a typeface where letters are placed in the broken windows. Inside there’s fire left, around—shards of glass. The letters are broken too but keep standing.
HOSTOMEL, a town near Kyiv, home of the largest aircraft in the world—MRIYA
(“Dream” in Ukrainian).
Chernihiv—70% of buildings in the city are destroyed now.
SUMY—a city in north-eastern Ukraine that has suffered a lot from russian invasion right from the very first days of war.

KRAMATORSK—a city in Donetsk region. On April 8 it was attacked by russian Tochka-U missiles which hit the main train station. Thousands of people were about to evacuate at that moment.

As the result, more than 50 people were killed and about 100 were hospitalized.
MARIUPOL — a city in south-east of Ukraine. Here, each letter is shot through. The same way as the city is shot through rockets and bombs.

The city with nearly 500 000 habitants is now in ruins occupied by russians. Massive graves of killed innocent people are right in the city and nearby.
