Typographic Character as Form

This project was using formal exploration and exploring letterforms contrasting elements rather than simply an abstract shape. The exploration was done by using graphic design actions to explore many possible compositions, exploring and playing with the perception of foreground and background/positive and negative space. Two typefaces, Futura PT Book and Baskerville URW Bold along with their Uppercase, Lowercase letters/characters were used throughout this process to support the exploration.
Letterform exploration of letter "A"
Letterform exploration of letter "F"
Letterform exploration of letter "J"
Letterform exploration of letter "S"
Letterform exploration of letter "W"
I chose to explore the idea of pairing with the letters A, F, J, S, and W where I felt that these five characters of the two typefaces displayed an interesting formal characteristics. Then moved on to creating a minimum of 25 compositions pairing these characters in different ways, scale, position, along with thinking about Carl Dair's Seven Contrasts of Type, using techniques like cropping or rotating to create contrast and emphasizing the details of the characters.
From the 125 composition created, I chose 5 that I felt the most successful and best at emphasizing the interesting details, positive/negative spacing, and other principles while showing the contrast between the two character's form.
Final Composition
The strongest final composition that I felt best succeeded was the composition pairing of letter/character A's. The composition shows the contrast between the two characters' form, the use of negative/positive spacing, emphasizing on the detailing of the characters and also implying the contrast of size, weight, direction that Carl Dair's Seven Typographic Contrast spoke of.
