Przylasek Rusiecki | Recreational complex in Cracow

The topic of my diploma thesis was the design of the Leisure and Recreation Complex by the Przylasek Rusiecki lake situated in Nowa Huta district in Cracow. District that is well-known for its industrial history, being a remarkable example of socialist realist utopian city. Throughout time many open-baths were held in Cracow close to the city center. Recently none of them are operating causing inhabitants to use overcrowded lakes with no infrastructure. The goal of this project was to analyse history and trends in designing those types of public spaces and service buildings in the city, to notice trends and similarities in those facilities. I also focused on the social aspect of open baths - what role do they play in integrating citizens and what has changed since their closure.
Shape of the building was created from two main ideas. I wanted to form a horizontal structure to emphasize the landscape. At the same time, I considered sunlight and shadow as important shape creating factors. That is why I „broke” linear form to harmonise with shoreline and added arcades as a shelter from the sun. Three natural materials were used to correspond with the surrounding - wood, glass and concrete.
Building itself becomes a symbolic entrance to the complex - the wooden path leads us through the main hall to the beach and then continues as a jetty to the middle of the lake.
