Typographic Characters as Form

The vernacular type project focused on the visual exploration of from and character pairings. Typefaces can be categorized by their curves or angles, but they can also be seen as simple forms that are made out of shapes. To look at the visual relationship of typefaces and their simple forms I began by creating multiple pairings that explored changing their size, rotation, and cropping.
Exploration
Serif's & Sans Serif typefaces
The first step focused on choosing two serif and sans serif typefaces. The serifs were then set to show their complete alphabet in both uppercase and lowercase. After comparing each typeface I then chose Interstate Regular as my sans serif typeface and Bodoni URW Medium as my serif typeface for my next exploration.
Set of Compositions
Final Compositions
During my next exploration I created more than 125 compositions where I combined only two letters either both serif or sans serif per composition. The typefaces varied when it came to their weights and they could be uppercase or lowercase. The letters could also be cropped or rotated to best find contrasting elements and forms.
