The smart city refers to a type of urban development based on sustainability that is capable of adequately responding to the basic needs of institutions, companies, and the inhabitants themselves, both economically and in operational, social and environmental.
The Smart City concept arises from the evolution of the so-called Digital Cities, which were born in Spain in 2004 after work carried out by the Ministry of Industry of this country with the preparation of the first Digital Cities program that was addressed in the world. Prior to the preparation of this work, the Spanish company ACCEDA, chaired by Enrique Ruz Bentué, brought together, for the first time in history, more than 30 companies from various sectors (telecommunications, security, construction, audiovisual, consumer electronics, electrical material , computing, health, education, etc), together with the governments of Spanish regions and cities, to create a Digital Community. The result of this multisectoral meeting led to the ephemeral presentation of a 5,000 m2 city that included housing, a bank, hospital, hotel, tax office, post office, government offices, a school, and everything in an urban environment with public lighting, traffic lights , urban furniture and everything that would make up a real city, but in a cinematographic presentation.

La ciudad inteligente se refiere a un tipo de desarrollo urbano basado en la sostenibilidad que es capaz de responder adecuadamente a las necesidades básicas de instituciones, empresas, y de los propios habitantes, tanto en el plano económico, como en los aspectos operativos, sociales y ambientales.
El concepto Smart City surge de la evolución de las llamadas Ciudades Digitales, que en el año 2004 nacen en España tras un trabajo que realizó el Ministerio de Industria de este país con la elaboración del primer programa de Ciudades Digitales que se abordaba en el mundo. Previo a la elaboración de este trabajo, la empresa española ACCEDA presidida por Enrique Ruz Bentué reunió, por primera vez en la historia, a más de 30 empresas de diversa procedencia sectorial (telecomunicaciones, seguridad, construcción, audiovisual, electrónica de consumo, material eléctrico, informática, salud, educación, etc), junto a gobiernos de regiones y ciudades españolas, para crear Comunidad Digital. El resultado de esa reunión multisectorial llevó a la presentación efímera de una ciudad de 5.000 m2 que incluía viviendas, un banco, hospital, hotel, oficina de tributación, correos, oficinas de gobierno, escuela y todo en un entorno urbano con alumbrado público, semáforos, mobiliario urbano y todo lo que conformaría una ciudad verdadera, pero en una presentación de formato cinematográfico.
