Consider with sympathy then, the case of anyone caught unawares by such a calamitous bore. Is there any way to avoid such a dreary tune? Or are we doomed to bear with fortitude the slings and arrows of chance acquaintance. Fear not, the solution is at hand. Or should we say foot.
A discreet glance earthwards will reveal the nature of the threat. After all the wise say, “a man’s shoes are an advertisement for his mind.” A glimpse of bad taste in this direction can be spotted at ten metres and evasive action initiated immediately.
On the other hand, if it reveals a quiet pair of nubuck leather moccasins or hand-antiqued Oxfords, you can be rest assured of a pleasant encounter. However, eternal vigilance suggests that you should keep your mental inventory of acceptable footwear up-to-date. A stroll into the new Clarks store at Kemp’s Corner should suffice.

As you may have noticed over the centuries, the British are not given to loud talk and noisy bombast. In fact, in a world increasingly populated by vulgar apes, you can spot the reticent islander a mile away. He is the only one not thumping his own chest. After all, these are the same people who described the largest naval battle in history as a skirmish! Is it surprising then, that his sartorial preferences lean towards discretion? Though he may be loather to trumpet his opinions abroad, a pair of comfortable nubuck leather loafers will always give him a sense of quiet satisfaction; a pair of hand-perforated brogues may even excite him into an appreciative glance.
This is not to say that the average British gentleman is stuck-in-the-mud. The day he decides to wear red leather boots, he will sally forth in them as if it is a matter of no great moment. He is merely following his own whimsy, not the silly dictates of some passing trend.
