Color Blind Accessible Game Design

The New Light
Working with a group of students I designed video game titled, 'The New Light' that seeks to shed light on issues of accessibility in video games.  Our goal was to design a game that prioritized Color-Blind Accessibility first, rather than adding color blind options in later.
I worked on the characters, items, and enemy assets. We put a lot of thought into making sure our color choices included high contrast so that the game was designed for accessibility first, and appearances second.
The game would begin in black and white, allowing you to light up new areas as you unlocked them.  I designed the characters and enemies in black and white, while lights and items I designed in red to add strong contrast with the green backgrounds another student designed.
We continually checked our project with someone who was actually colorblind to make sure they could get the same experience as anyone else playing. We believe games should be designed with accessibility first, and hope that our design conveys that.
