The Gender Pay Gap in STEM Workforce

This infographic was created as a sharable print with the goal of engaging the audience and raising the awareness of workplace gender inequality. Data is made relatable by putting human faces behind it. The gender pay gap is highlighted as missing pixels in the photos.

The STEM workforce (science, technology, engineering and math) has seen significant growth in recent decades, and is projected to grow even more after the COVID-19 pandemic. But women in STEM jobs still face more workplace hurdles in than those in non-STEM jobs, one of which is earning less than their male colleagues for the same job.

The Visualization
◼︎ The jagged shapes adds to the striking visual effect, further emphasizing the gender pay gap.
The Details

◼︎ Job categories are printed in small prints and grey color, making them lower on the visual hierarchy.
◼︎ They are intended to be non-distracting yet retain legibility.
The Process

◼︎ I began by reviewing the dataset. In addition to the data shown in the poster, the dataset also contains information such as: the number of men vs. women in each job category, the statistical significance, and margin of error, etc.
◼︎ My first decision is to define the goal and the key message. I decided to create emotional triggers to engage the general audience (as opposed to communicate data findings in a complete and accurate manner). Therefore, I chose to focus on just one aspect—the fact that women are underpaid a significant percentage in most of the job categories.
◼︎ Next, chart sketches were done to help ideation. The main idea is to put faces behind the data in order to humanize the numbers and make them relatable. Chart type and colors were chosen in a way that enhances the visual impact.
