Masterproject 1: Hoekse lijn

The Hoekse lijn is the revamping of the existing railway line between Rotterdam and Hoek van Holland. The railline runs along the Nieuwe Waterweg and the industrialized waterfront. This forms a barrier between urbanized areas and the water. The focus of this project has been to find strategies to reconnect urbanized areas and with the water. A former industrial site near Maassluis was taken as a study location. Transformation is proposed within an open process that allows development in different speed and size, within a framework.
The space in-between the railroad and the Waterweg has been treated as an area for the functions unwanted or unsuitable for the more populated area´s. Aside from the industries which benefit from the direct relation to the Waterweg many other nuisance industries and businesses have turned these spaces into areas with a low visual quality. The villages have turned their backs towards this belt of negative spaces, and so they avert their relation with the Waterweg.
In between the waterweg and the cities there is neglected space which. This project aims at the improvement of these areas.
an layered example of the neglected waterfront of Maassluis.
In this example the waterfront becomes more accesbile by implementing the Hoekselijn in to the street.
