Project 4 - Radical Reconstruction

CaixaForum Madrid

Refurbished by Herzog & de Meuron from 2001-2007.  The building was formerly a powerstation, Central Electrical Powerstation of Medodia [La central electrica del Mediodía].  The objective of this project was to create a public square in the access area where a gas station once stood in front of the building.

The building itself reflects the time when the economic sector of the country relied on industries and factories.

Presently, CaixaForum fulfills the call for the city's need for a space which reflects and promotes its cultural heritage and room for the future artists.

The curators of the museum, La Caixa, wanted a building to host the arts and cultural events.

The redesign of the building included: opening up the base below the ground floor, giving the illusion of a floating building.  Three concrete load bearing elements are placed inside to hold the structure of the cor-ten cladded roof.
