The title of her master's project Empire of Light is a direct reference to the painted paradox by the Belgian surrealist René Magritte. Her greatest source of inspiration is this image of an idea, a conflict full of suspense and contradictions. In the group exhibition ‘Into the Pink Sun’ she is exhibiting backlit transparencies and digital photographic prints. The backlit transparencies that are displayed in front of windows will change according to the time of day and positioning of the sun. With access to daylight, the image is live, and when the light particles disappear, the image dies. The embodied message of this complex beauty is that rhythms control life on Earth. This is inspired by Susan Sontag's quote, “life is not significant details, illuminated by a flash, fixed forever. Photographs are.”

Dagny Hay (b. Astrid Gjersøe Skåtterød, 1990) is a visual artist, who predominantly work with photography. Hay fears the vicious circle most of all. Her works relate to themes such as restlessness, sleep, artificial light and daylight and the self-portrait, where she mixes her own story with illusions and escapism. Her likeness has given birth to an alter ego. ‘The alter ego’, an eagle that attacks, fights and is always on the move, ‘her’, a ruthless protector, a skilled concealer, and faithful to the pain of the pathetic youth that gave birth to her. They are a dueling duo, a unit with a purpose that acts on whim. She is especially inspired by contradictions and whatever she finds exciting and her fantasies spring from her media-saturated life and a fleeting relationship with clocks, light and darkness.

Hay is represented by Photo Gallery Vasli Souza in Oslo.
