For my second year final major project I have worked on creating an rpgmaker 2003 game from scratch. In the contrary to its name, it is actually not a traditional generic rpg game, and it is actually tribute to the Japanese exploration game called Yume Nikki, a game created in 2004 on a Japanese 2chan forum that originally had no popularity until the english translation patch was released.
The game flow consists of the protagonist being trapped in her room and unwilling to leave, so she must sleep and dream to progress and explore the worlds. The dreams are very surreal and random with a perculiarly creepy edge to them, yet each world has a distinct theme of loneliness and getting lost due to lack of directions, leaving the player to remember worlds by memory.
I have played this game myself and have found it was very deep and emotional despite having virtually no dialogue, using game progression to describe the character as you explore her dreams. I have been inspired to make a game similar to it but in no means a copy.
The first spark to the inspiration flames begun in a discussion with a friend and myself, the result being these images of the protagonist Vietina, the antagonist "Sister", and a couple of other minor characters in the background. We also discussed the story behind it all, and originally Sister abused Vietina often although it was not explained why.
Since then, I have been working on my own takes of the concepts and going further, gradually creating worlds and effects in concept and pixel art form.

My personal take on Vietina and several of the powers called "effects" that she is able to find, use and change into at will. They will originally begin as items found in the real world, and will be unusable until taken into the "switch voids", portals only able to be seen and entered by Vietina herself due to an accident that nearly left her blind.
Rough drawing of an interior map design with the first Switch Void portal. Despite visible damage, this only appears to Vietina and can be interacted with her alone.
Several variations of the minor antagonist group called "catmasks". This is a mix of a psyche affecting virus that spreads through living things via contact, that only affects mentally forces humans to wear cat-like masks over their face and pursue after humans to capture and take away from their homes so they can be exposed to catmask contact and hopefully changed.
They will be numerous, and will hopefully be implemented to gradually spread through Vietina's town, and even be incarnated as fears in the Switch void.
One of the Switch Void npcs named Guardian, a large armored figure that will never reappear once dead, and will block entry into the royal castle in "Paper kingdom world", a Cardboard and paper world that will be populated with toy people and soldiers made of cards. Even if attacked, it will be non-violent towards Vietina, and killing him will turn Vietina's "Rapier" effect into the "Corrupted knight" effect, demonstrating how effects can be changed by karma afflicting events. Whether this will be turned back has not been decided.
