Martin Stanev is an illustrator and author based in the UK. Whether he’s mixing a variety of traditional media on paper, or layering textures and colours digitally, his work always carries an element of narrative and storytelling. His debut picture book, The Planet in a Pickle Jar, was named one of the best children’s books of 2021 by The Guardian and has been translated into more than seven languages worldwide. 

Martin’s work draws inspiration from vintage illustrated books and print ephemera, historical periods, the natural world and childhood nostalgia. Recently he’s been fascinated by working in limited colour palettes. Martin likes to create playful, full of emotion characters that inhabit rich and magical worlds. 

Originally from Bulgaria, he moved to the UK where he graduated in Illustration from Falmouth University. Martin now lives just south of the Lake District, UK, where the landscape brings back memories of home.
