Springtime in the Palouse

Springtime in the Palouse
Living on the edge of the Palouse region, I have the luxury of being able to throw my camera gear into my car and drive along country roads in the rolling wheat fields of eastern Washington. Though I sometimes intentionally drive toward a known destination, such as the top of Steptoe Butte, I also enjoy randomly driving and discovering unexpected small scenes in the countryside. This set includes a few recent images from these explorations.

In May, the landscape is made up of a patchwork of fields in various states, ranging from freshly plowed dirt (revealing surprising tones of purple and red, as well as orange from the stubble of last year's crop) to young sprouting wheat (shades of green from light to dark). When the rich canvas of color is combined with the light and shadow created by the rolling hills, the photographic possibilities are endless.
And now for something completely different. While looking at landscape possibilities in the distance, I spotted a couple of very young yellow-bellied marmots cautiously exploring their world in the early morning sunshine.
I look forward to exploring the Palouse in the coming months and experiencing the continued evolution of the agricultural landscape.
