Systems mapping is articulating the relations between insights (derived from research and synthesis) to create a structured understanding of the user at a specific time and place– defining what impacts, drives and changes them, which can then inform and ensure designs are truly user-centred to meet their needs.
The most interesting challenge of systems mapping for me is the creative process of creating the visual representations to convey and communicate the complexity of my findings as clearly and easily as possible.
During a 9-month design research project on living and aging in place (AIP) in Canada, I've created the following 3 systems maps that each serve it's own distinct purposes to help understand:
1. The varied and changing needs of older adults
2. The societal context that shape and influence the AIP experience
3. Ensuring the wellbeing of older adults aging in place
