Laser Etched Tote Bags

Laser Etched Tote Bags

For my final project in my CNC robotics class, I could do most anything I wanted as long as it involved using a CNC-controlled machine to do it. I made these bags with the intention of having cute designs on bags that could be customized by painting inside the etched designs.

The bags are just bags. But they feature designs that I really like looking at (a opossum, flowers, and a bee with flowers), and they sure do hold things. They're a really nice size and hold a lot of stuff without being too bulky, and I'm happy with how they came out.

Making these bags was a very up-and-down experience. My original intent was to have them be embroidered, but the embroidery machine broke and I had to pivot my design at the last minute. It definitely made me better at being flexible in my plans and what I do, but I wasn't too happy about the reason why. It did at least give me a little bit of practice with the embroidery machine, so hopefully I'll be better at using it in the future.
I used the laser cutter on a very low setting to gently burn the designs into the bags. This didn't weaken the fabric, but it made markings that can't be worn off like pressed vinyl designs.
