WLT Neustadt Festival 2013

Every year, the World Literature Today hosts a Neustadt Festival of International Literature & Culture where they honor a featured author. The 2013 featured speaker is Naomi Shihab Nye and the prize is for Children’s Literature.

We were asked to brand and design a poster for the event and we were given several themes to develop concepts for the poster. I decided to work with the idea of the power of literature to bridge divides. After researching and exploring, I decided to communicate literature with the quill, or eagle feather, also used as the award given to the featured author.
Promotional Motion Graphic
My solution consists of geometric abstracted feathers. Each feather is a different color, alluding to different cultures. They are made up of different shades, tints and tones indirectly reflecting the different aspects that make up a culture. Together, the different cultures create a unified rhythmic movement across the composition. A harmonic sense of community through literature is created. The subtle addition of the circle at the top of each feather imitates the shape of the tip of fountain pens. The idea is that these two different types of writing utensils, a traditional and more contemporary, are integrated to evoke unity. A subtle texture made up of a pen tip and quill is also added to the background to reinforce this idea.
