Understanding Auditory Processing Disorders

Auditory Processing Disorder, also known as Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD), is a developmental or acquired inability of the brain to understand the meaning of sounds. APD is not linked to impaired hearing, hearing loss, or poor intelligence.

In auditory processing disorder treatment, the health professional (i.e. psychologist, OT, etc.) will assess to diagnose APD. The patient must pay attention to various signals and reply to them by repeating them, pressing a button, or other methods.

Some of the most common signs of Auditory Processing Disorder are:

Short attention span
Easily distracted
Oversensitivity to certain sounds
Poor vocabulary
Poor memory
Easily confused with simple instructions
