ALIENS EXIST (Probably)

Statement of Intent
Aliens Exist (Probably) is a lighthearted book discussing life, its existence on Earth, and the probability of it existing outside Earth as well. As there is little hard evidence proving
aliens exist, this book aims to simply open people’s minds to the idea of it.

Design
This project takes the form of a short book. The design aims to be entertaining and light
hearted through the combination of photographs, illustrations, and minimal writing. The
target audience for this book are young adults with enough foreknown understanding of
space and life on earth. With a quick refresher of this knowledge, this book moves on to
discuss the probability of life beyond.

By combining images and illustrations, this book offers a variety of textures and colors
that contrast with a more youthful illustrative style. The style of illustrations aim to be
raw and textured while remaining quite simple. The colors are limited in the illustrations
to white, green, and gold to maintain this simplicity and stand out against the photographs.
This project was a senior design assignment with very few rules.

All it had to do was involve an egg.

It began with several rounds of explorations.
This first round of exploration was a little messy and, I'll admit, a little gross. But combining the innards of the egg with watercolor and broken shell pieces sort of resembled a galaxy in my mind, which definitely influenced the direction of the project.
For the second round of explorations, the entire class participated by printing and combining our photos from the first round. We arranged them together and took inspiration from each other's creativity.
For the third round of explorations, I used a Dremel to carve shapes into an empty egg shell. I loved playing with light and seeing how illuminating the eggshell showcased it's texture and unique characteristics.

This lit a lightbulb above my head, and I knew I wanted the project to involve space, planets, galaxies, and the like.
After some research and brainstorming, I began sketching my ideas for an illustrated book on the existence of aliens.
I took photos of different eggs to represent the planets, and took some long exposure shots of the night sky to use as the background.
After combining the different elements, and doing lots of design work in photoshop. The book was complete!
