Burton Barr Central Library Poster
This project details the process of developing a poster for a location of interest in Arizona. I chose to focus on the Burton Barr Central Library, a public library located in downtown Phoenix. The poster itself was required to be made physically by hand and only made up of black/white/greyscale.
The first step of poster production was research. I made my poster to reach the identified target audience of a 20-year old woman who is in the midst of getting her degree in Design at Grand Canyon University. This individual would benefit from knowledge about this location as it is a free, quiet spot perfect for studying or exploring art and history within the Phoenix metro.
Photos from Visiting Location
After research, I visited the location myself. This was my first time at the Burton Barr Central Library, so everything was new to me. I took many pictures of both details and overviews of the location.
Sketches
While at the location, I also sketched extensively in order to solidify what I experienced and have accurate notes about the spot.
Thumbnails
After taking photos and sketching, I began brainstorming and developing thumbnails of poster ideas.
Roughs
I continued in production by developing larger and more detailed roughs based on the thumbs I had already made. These roughs were more similar to each other with only small differences between each other.
Final Poster Design
Finally, I made the poster itself. Using an actual white poster board measuring 18x24", I cut out pieces of paper to collage together my final design in different shades of grey and black. I kept the design simple, without any shading or too many details, as the clean, simple look is likely to appeal to the young female audience. The simple line "the oasis awaits" is inviting, but it does not reveal too much information. This copy leaves the viewer curious for more information. The Burton Barr Central Library truly does serve as an oasis in more ways than one, as it is a refreshingly quiet and cool space within a loud city as well as a location with more plant life and decorative water features within a desert.
