Leather pendant lamp with window grating's shape

In the leather's industrial process, there are often many offcuts, and most of them are directly discarded. "exTra X leaTher" by cutting out individual units from leather remnants and combining and weaving them together to create the shape of window gratings, the scraps that would become waste can be retained and valuable.
Issue

Nowadays, environmental protection is an important issue; it is essential to recycle resources. After making a study on leather as the material, I found that two primary waste materials are easily discarded: the second layer of leather after the first layer is cut off, and the leftover side leather after the product is made. Using these resources, which are considered garbage, has become my main design idea and issue.
Research

The main topic of the project was to present the traditional Taiwanese street scenes, and finally, the element of iron window gratings was extracted. After observing different old window gratings, I found that most are composed of several identical patterns. This composition can be used appropriately to rearrange and combine the leather remnants. Using the remarkable shapes of old window gratings to form the final product, we can be environmentally friendly and create a design unique to Taiwan.
Processing Method

HANDLING OF SCRAP LEATHER
Cut leather in the smallest unit square as a modular part, then cut the pattern units with a laser cutter.
HANDLING OF SPLIT LEATHER
Both sides of the split leather are suede; partial quality is poor. Cut the patterns on the surface, and select the good parts.
SHAPING & CONNECTION
The unit parts of the split leather are cut out by a laser cutter, soaked in water, and shaped by air-drying, then attached with metal studs.

Deconstructing the selected iron gratings units, trying to use the smallest area as a single part to utilize the leather remnants. Trying various arrangements and color to complete a surface.
Leather parts and frame are connected with metal studs; the rough surface of the split leather and the pieces with the top layer of leather are interwoven to form a contrasting texture.
