This book covers the culture of the West African country of Niger. The goal of
Sounds of the Sahara is to shed some light on an often overlooked region of
the world, and specifically the enchanting music that is made there. The book
uses the sound and music of Niger as a framing device around spreads that
talk about food, landmarks, and culture.
Niger boasts a vibrant ethnomusicology culture, with the unique genre known as internationally as desert blues thriving in the region. This music blends rock, blues and North African, Tuareg, or Malian sounds.
The hypnotic vocals and undulating guitar riffs inspired the colorful collaging techniques at play throughout the booklet.
In addition to the inspiration brought on by the music itself, the album covers of the artists featured in the booklet offered unique visuals to reference in the design. The collage style specifically emulates the homemade, approachable feel that the album covers posses.
From left to right: Etran d'Lair (1+2), Les Filles de Illighadad (3+4), Hama, various artists.
