illustration for project Knjige naših ulica | Teuta | Greek - Croatian poet Dimitrija Demeter

The overarching motif for “Teuta” was the idea of the doppelganger. One is Teuta as the powerful and militant Illyrian queen and the other is Teuta as the meek woman willing to give up her power, consent to marriage and become a mother. This is why I choose to portray her in a court card fashion revealing her dual, split personality. Her polar opposites are imprisoned within the same body and mind. The only tell is the expression on her face that reveals the story of her transformation and emotions going from one extreme to the other. The restlessness of her soul is symbolized by the flame rising from her chest and carried by the wind in the opposite direction from her gaze.
