THE TRADEOFF
"Miss Julie" Play Re-staging
The Tradeoff is the contemporary staging for Miss Julie's play, which aims to show the story of class discrimination. The play was reborn at a kindergarten, so the main element on stage is inspired by the children's building blocks. This set design play with scale, space, light, darkness, and projection mapping. The modern furniture contrasts the old texture of the block structure to hint that this is the imperfect stage design that represents the play theme. The different levels of the building blocks and lighting also imply the difference between the social status of the protagonists.
- The stage starts with many building blocks located in the right corner
- Children transform those blocks and stack them together to stand on
- Transform: After singing a song, children bring some of the blocks to the backstages. And others organise some of the blocks into the tables.

- The circle and square blocks are used as standing places in the beginning are transformed into the dining table.
- The light only lit the kitchen area with three followed spotlights on the actors.
- The yellow light  feelings of frustration and anger, which is Jean feeling in that scene when talking about Julie's attitude

- The light only lit the Julie area, including Jean and Julie's position, with two followed spotlights.
- Yellow lights create a cozy atmosphere and recall the past.
- The back wall projected the tree looking upward perspective => representing Jean's dream (want to increase social status).

- The entire stage set is lit with red light, which creates an atmosphere of the climax emotional scene.
- The back wall on Julie's side projected the image of fire, which is her family's past stories.
- The circular frame on Jean's side projected the abstract image of a hotel, which is his dream to increase his social position.

- 2 practical spotlights lit half of the stage, showing the kitchen side, where Christine comeback and reminded Jean to go to church.
- The projection on the back wall showing the principal shadow (hinting that he comeback) is framed by the circular block.

- Part of the stage is lit with two main spotlights, following actors' spots and movements.
- Another spotlight lit the stair => showing the cracking texture on it => hinting that the stair nearly fell.
- The red light raises the emotions to a climax and creates a feeling of gore. The blue light creates a cold atmosphere that everything is about to break.
- The whole back wall is projected with the abstract image of bird death => representing Julie's loss of power and status.

Children come on stage and push the furniture, stair steps and blocks, making the set messy after Julie and Jean leave the stage, respectively.
The stage ends with the clutter position of all the objects.
